We Make Fonts

About: hochschulen, typografie, schriftgestaltung, lausanne

Jan, you think you're "an der falschen uni". Do you want to live in Lausanne? (it is quite a nice city.) Is your French adequate? (that's the main language in that part of Switzerland.) Can you afford the tuition fees (Studiengebühr) there? (they're not that high, but higher than Weimar.)
I have written an e-mail to ecal asking about setting up an exchange arrangement, as well as asking about their publishing programme – how they are funded, who manages it, etc.
I agree, our university press leaves something to be desired, but they are totally underfunded and understaffed. A few students have however managed to get books published, with the Hochschulverlag or without. Indra Kupferschmid's "Buchstaben kommen selten allein", Markus Goldamer's "Imprimatur", the "Typoart" book. It takes a lot of work, but so does anything worthwhile.
It's true, if you really want to specialize in type design, you're at the wrong school. There's only me here to supervise such projects, with another prof coming in the fall (if we're lucky, the right one). And we both (will) have to cover the whole spectrum of graphic design and typography since there are no other profs here who (can) do that. There are of course two "Mitarbeiter" who also occasionally work in this area, but neither of them is a specialist in type or typography. Since March we have Gaby Kosa (Mitarbeiterin Typografie), but she will need a bit of time to acclimatize. And all of these positions are only 50%, as well as being "befristet". Vis. Comm. does indeed need two more design profs (each with their own Mitarbeiter) but it is unlikely that we will get them within your or my (life)time here.
Wherever we are, there are compromises to make. We just have to manage with what we have, or do our constructive best to improve it.

That's what we're trying to do, aren't we?
You, and us.
